Mechanism behind actor observer bias4/13/2024 In the end, you go to work to get things done and to earn a living, not to make friends⁉️ ❓What is the value of connecting with your colleagues❓ ➡️ Reach out! #curiosity #brainfunction #wellbeingintheworkplace #employeeengagement ❓ Curious to find out more about what helps your brain function well while increasing wellbeing? ✅ Treat your brain well, meet its biological needs, create human connections that make you feel safe and your brain will reward you with curiosity, cognitive power, learning, creativity and engagement.□ Curiosity is dead - literally: blood flow to higher cognitive functions is reduced, or only used to find ways to ‘get out’.Ĭuriosity, leading to out-of-the-box-thinking is yet another area where an emotionally balanced brain comes out on top. Under pressure and stress we mainly strive to learn one thing: how best to exit the situation, and we mostly apply whatever has kept us alive in the past. That’s how we have built the modern world.īut the modern world, so different from our evolutionary history, has also had an impact on the wellbeing of many of us, and with that, on the wellbeing of many brains.īusinesses might feel this impact in decreased employee engagement, difficulties in retaining talent, or in the slowing of innovation.Īgain, brains that are well and feel safe are curious, looking to go deeper in what they find meaningful. They want to learn, solve problems, create and innovate. More precisely, brains that are well and feel safe are curious, looking to go deeper in what they find meaningful. We humans are innately curious, always eager to learn, especially about things we find personally valuable. #brainfunction #judgement #cognitivebias #leadingpeople ![]() □Might you consider this in your next discussion at work? So even if you tend not to judge people, and are convinced of your open-mindedness (a way in which I like to think of myself □), know that human brain processes are at work also in you. If someone else shows unhelpful behaviour we are quick to attribute this to their character, to the way ‘they are’, with little or no consideration given to the situation. If we realise we have acted in an undesirable way we are likely to ascribe our actions to the circumstance. The actor-observer-effect describes the human phenomenon of using different modes of judgement for our own behaviour compared to the behaviour of others. Thanks to the highly efficient brain processes that allow such speedy judgement we are able to categorise, generalise, conceptualise, think efficiently and make quick decisions.īUT… quick is not always accurate, well-balanced or helpful. We are quick in labelling people and judging them in the moment based on their actions and current behaviour. ![]() □In life, including at work, especially if you are a Leader, beware of the ‘Actor-Observer Effect’.
